This year why not step out in style at the in a Popeye the Sailor Man Costume and bring along your best mate Olive Oyl. We all know that Popeye is one of the best-known sailors. This outfit need not be complicated. Find a black shirt, some blue pants add the trademark pipe and cap and you are all set. For you best mate Olive Oyl have your gal pull on a black skirt, a long red top and add a hat with a flower and you guys are ready to step out for some fun on Halloween. If you have a friend who would like to join in the fun, why not ask them to dress up as Bluto, Popeye’s arch villain. Bluto wore a solid pair of dark pants and a solid dark top; add a beard, and fake muscles if necessary.
The must have accessories for Popeye the Sailor Man is his cap, yellow belt and pipe. Don’t forget your muscle arms, and spinach can. For Olive Oyl why not spice it up a little go with a short black skirt, a red top with a plunging neckline and white color. Don’t forget to pull up your hair into to curls or a tight ponytail, and must have black pumps. Don’t forget to include Sweet Pea into the Halloween fun. If you remember, Sweet Pea was Popeye’s adoptive child. Sweet Pea could be fun, like the pea in the pod outfit you see here.
Did you know that Popeye the Sailor Man appeared in the Thimble Theater comic strip starting in 1929? Even though the comic strip writer Elzie Segar died in 1930’s many writers have taken over the task of writing the comic that is now called Popeye.
We all know that Popeye the Sailor Man gets his strength from eating his spinach, so make sure you have a can on hand in case you need to defend your sweetheart Olive Oyl from the roughneck Bluto.
Spinach was used in the comic strip to represent not only strength but allow Popeye to make it through life threatening adventures. The spinach allowed Popeye the Sailor Man to swim fast using his pipe as a propeller, and ward off bullets. Your Popeye the Sailor Man Costume must include the pipe which should be used to suck the spinach from the can as well as altering your speech to change the way your T’s sound.

Do you have to eat spinach for a week before you can wear this costume ? I used to detest spinach as a kid but now I quite like it. I think it’s how you serve it or maybe my palate has become more refined. For the previous poster…Robin Williams made a Popeye movie around 1980. It wasn’t that good and I think that a movie remake will be in the pipeline given the love of comic book heors in Hollywood these days.

I wonder if they update Popeye, whether they will update his tattoos ? Given that everyone is tattoo crazy these days, two anchors look really plain but probably made him look like quite a rebel and original to some extent. Maybe he will have a full blown Maori arm tattoo.

I grew up with Popeye, Bluto, Olive Oyl, Wimpy and the gang and I’ve always loved them. I thought the Robin Williams movie was great. Thanks for helping me re-live my childhood days. BTW I learned to love fresh spinach!! I think all those Popeye cartoons may have had a subliminal effect on me. Love your costumes.

There is not as much iron as the study actually suggested but whole industries have been created because of Popeye’s use of Spinach. First thing that came to mind was Spartacus… from Lazy Town. Very sexy for a kids programmer! Shouldn’t think there will to many of them, unlike superman or spiderman…
As someone suggested, making your costume would probably be the least expensive route. It will take longer, but fabric, notions and a pattern are less expensive than some of the shoddily made costumes out there.

Popeye the sailor man costume brings back memories from back in the days. I remember vividly how popeye used to make think eating spinach cooked at home was cool. Popeye is a tree hugger.
